I also like Craig3’s solution of turning off write caching, though I have not tried it yer. Description: MY PASSPORT 4TB BLACK WORLDWIDE. I got just this informations by checking the S/N: Model Number: WDBYFT0040BBK-WESN. ('WD Drive Unlock' software) I have tried the online warranty status to get hopefully the production date. It seems to have disappeared from WD software. This is probaly called WD smartware - i dont really know atm. After the formatting is complete, right click on the drive and select Delete. Right click on the drive to format, select Format from the context menu, click on OK and wait for the drive to be formatted. I also wonder what happened to the WD utility that I used to have (on a previous PC) that would re-lock and allow removal of the drive safely. Press Windows logo + X keys on the keyboard and select Disk management from the context menu. I think that’s what the WD Erase utility does. But maybe all I need to do to erase them is reformat them. I have already erased this yellow drive and relocked it using the new WD Security program. You need WD Utilities to do that, I think. This is a concern because of the problem with the security holes in WD’s hardware encryption that have been widely reported and discussed in this forum.Ī partial fix (supposedly) from WD for the security issue is to use a new version of the Security (lock drive) program after first erasing the drive. What you lose with not having WD Utils is the Erase function. Uninstalling the WD Utilities worked perfectly for me with a WD Yellow 2Tb drive.
